Rising hostilities between Iran and the United States have escalated fears of a full-scale conflict, causing widespread disruption in Middle Eastern airspace. For safety reasons, several major international airlines have canceled flights to destinations in the region or rerouted their flights to avoid high-risk areas.
As of Saturday, the following airlines have announced changes or suspensions in their operations:
Biman Bangladesh Airlines and US-Bangla Airlines: In response to growing military tensions in the Middle East, both carriers have suspended all flights from Bangladesh to Middle Eastern destinations. US-Bangla specifically halted flights to Jeddah, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Dubai, Muscat, and Doha. Similarly, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has canceled all flights on routes to the Middle East.
The decisions follow reports of attacks on U.S. facilities across Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the UAE, creating heightened security risks in the region’s airspace.
Lufthansa: Germany’s leading airline has suspended all flights to Tel Aviv, Beirut, and Oman until March 7. Additionally, flights to Dubai scheduled for today and tomorrow have been canceled. Lufthansa confirmed that until March 7, it will avoid airspace over Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Iran.
Turkish Airlines: Turkey’s national carrier has canceled all flights today to Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, the UAE, and Oman. Furthermore, flights to Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Jordan will remain suspended until March 2.
Qatar Airways: Due to the closure of airspace in Qatar, the airline has temporarily suspended all flights departing from and arriving in Doha.
Air France: France’s national airline canceled all flights to Tel Aviv and Beirut scheduled for today.
Japan Airlines: Tokyo-based Japan Airlines has canceled today’s flight from Tokyo-Haneda to Doha, along with the return flight on March 1, according to reports from Nikkei.
Norwegian Air: The Nordic airline suspended all flights to Dubai today. However, their summer schedules to Beirut and Tel Aviv remain unaffected.
Virgin Atlantic: London-based Virgin Atlantic has temporarily rerouted flights to avoid Iraqi airspace. As a result, today’s VS400 flight from London to Dubai was canceled.
Iberia Express: Spain’s Iberia Express canceled its scheduled flight to Tel Aviv this afternoon.
LOT Polish Airlines: LOT’s flight LO121 from Warsaw to Dubai returned to Warsaw midway due to safety concerns.
IndiGo (India): India’s leading carrier, IndiGo, stated that it is closely monitoring the situation across the region. Adjustments to flight paths due to airspace changes may lead to longer travel times for passengers.
